There are two main ways that states can recognize a transportation license issued by another state. The first is with what is known as reciprocity. This occurs when a state considers another state's gun license to be valid through statutes or mutual agreements. There may also be unilateral recognition of LTC, such as if Texas recognizes LTC from a certain state that does not recognize LTC issued by Texas.

If your goal is to be able to get from Texas to another state and you're allowed to legally hide transportation, you'll want to focus primarily on the reciprocity states we listed above. In states that are one-sided, you may still be able to conceal a gun in some situations. For example, in Wisconsin, LTCs issued by Texas are recognized, but LTCs in Wisconsin are not recognized by Texas. However, in Washington State, the unilateral agreement goes the other way, which means that Texas LTCs are not recognized in Washington.

In Texas, a transportation license is no longer required if you meet eligibility requirements. However, if you want to take advantage of the benefits provided by an LTC and legally hide the carry in another state, you will need an LTC if it is a state that has reciprocity with Texas or a unilateral agreement that favors Texas. It's equally important to thoroughly review the laws that apply to guns and firearms in general when you plan to travel and transport, especially in the states you'll be passing through on your way to your intended destination. Texas is home to nearly 29 million people and has issued 1.5 million concealed carry (CC) licenses, which means that 7.4% of the population already has CC permits.

Being fully aware of their gun rights and state laws is the first step every Texan must take to having a responsible firearm. The next is to understand how Texas gun laws are translated through. Still, when it comes specifically to Texas LTC requirements, there are some strong laws worth reviewing. This proclamation is one-sided; Texas gun license holders will not be allowed to carry guns in Washington. The South Dakota Codified Law, chapter 23-7, 7.4 (23-7-7), recognizes that a person with a valid Texas license to carry a handgun can carry in South Dakota. Whether or not an LTC you have in Texas is valid in another state depends on what applies reciprocally.

Many states, including Texas, have not adopted constitutional carryover, but others have constitutional carryover in its entirety, while others have a limited form of law. The Tennessee Code without annotations, Title 39, Chapter 17, Part 13, §51, provides recognition for a person with a valid Texas license to carry a handgun to carry in Tennessee. Skoric, Senior Deputy Attorney General, proclaimed that people with a valid license to carry a gun can carry guns in Texas and Wyoming. Individuals with an existing license can log in through the Texas DPS portal and complete an online renewal form.
