Will Texas still issue License to Carry?

The information does not replace or replace the advice or representation of a licensed attorney. In gun license classes, applicants learn basic firearm laws, conflict resolution, and proper firearm storage, and must demonstrate basic shooting proficiency. Long guns such as shotguns and rifles, including semi-automatic rifles, were and are still allowed to be openly transported in most public places in Texas without a license. But instead, in this legislative session, we saw legislators go in the totally opposite direction and continue to loosen gun restrictions in Texas.

New gun laws were expected after several mass shootings in Texas, including incidents about two years ago in El Paso and Midland-Odessa. Now, people who qualify under the law can carry a gun in a public place in Texas without a license to carry (LTC). Read on for details on Texas constitutional carry, how to get your LTC, and why it's such a good idea to have a license in the first place. That's free and voluntary, but it certainly addressed some of the concerns, at least, that you're totally getting rid of any training for a Texan who may want it once they carry a gun.

Not all states offer reciprocity, but those that do will allow you to carry your firearm while in that state, as long as you have a valid Texas LTC. In addition, gun buyers can skip a background check if they have a license to carry them, and even carry them in some places that those without a permit cannot. This doesn't change the fact that anyone who buys a gun in Texas from a federally licensed drug dealer still has to go through the FBI background check. Under the new law, (expected to take effect in September 2002) Texans would no longer need that license to carry a gun.

In general, all other records are confidential and not subject to mandatory disclosure, except that the applicant or licensee may receive a copy of the disclosable records upon request and payment of a reasonable fee.
